Granite Kitchens

Granite is popular to use in kitchens because of it’s durability, it’s resistance to stains, and it’s porosity. It’s also favored because of the look of granite. You can polish it up to the point where it looks just like marble. It’s a great substitute for marble, quartzite and limestone as a building material when remodeling your home.

Uses and Applications

You can build or remodel the kitchen with granite countertops, granite backsplashes, granite shelves, granite sinks, granite kitchen islands, granite tile flooring or granite tile walls. Granite can be purchased in slabs and cut down to a custom size, or in tile form. Using a contractor like Reliable, will assure that your kitchen is assembled the way you want.

Key Benefits

Granite is often used for kitchen remodeling and construction projects because it is a highly durable and versatile material, is easy to clean, and is visually attractive. Other key benefits of granite are that it does not harbor bacteria and is easy to sanitize, can be cut and formed into any shape including ovals, arches and squares, is relatively scratch-resistant, and can accommodate hot pans and pots without getting scorched or burned. Even more than other materials, Granite can add value to the home.

Types

Several varieties of granite are available. These include biotite granite that has high concentrations of quartz, biotite, K-feldspar and plagioclase; hornblende granite that contains mica and hornblende, and Tourmaline granite that contains high concentrations of Tourmaline. Whether you’re investing in granite kitchen countertops or tile flooring, you can choose from hundreds of shades of granite that range from green, blue, purple, green, silver, ivory, gray and pink.

Considerations

Unlike other kitchen surfaces, granite will not stain or dull over time. It is very low-maintenance and can be cleaned using regular household cleaners, soap and water. In addition to cleaning your granite surfaces on a regular basis, you may need to have a professional seal the surfaces using a special finish. The sealing process must be performed at least once per year to protect the granite from chipping and general wear and tear.

Granite in the World

One of the most widely used materials for interiors is Granite for construction, Rough Blocks Granite, Mason, Kitledge, Milford, and Chelmsford to name a few. You can find granite in countertops, and floor tiles. There is a chance that someone, or you yourself, has something in the home made of granite.

Counter Tops: As mentioned, many people all over the world are now using granite as a layer for their counter tops, such as in their bathrooms, kitchens, and even mantelpieces. The type of granite that is usually used for this type of building is called Biotite-granite and some of the Biotite-granite types include quartz and even plagioclase.

Of course, when it goes into the construction of counter tops in homes and buildings the granite is usually polished, which is the method of cleaning and polishing it that gives it the shiny and modern look for homes and buildings. In addition, biotite granite can come in a variety of colors, which is also yet another reason why individuals choose to use this for decoration in their homes. This type of granite can come in such colors as pink, black, grey, and even white.

Monuments: Aside from granite counter tops, granite has many more uses and can even be used when producing statues and monuments. When it comes to monuments of this type, such as the ones that are erected in memory of an infamous figure or event, they have been typically made of marble in the past. However, in more recent times granite stone has been used in conjunction with marble or even by itself as a stand-alone monument. Statues, cemetery memorials and monuments, and even headstones can all be made out of granite, and even produced or polished to the buyer’s satisfaction.

Benefits of Building with Granite: There are plenty of reasons that one may want to use granite as a material when building their new home or even remodeling their current one. First, granite is considered to be a versatile stone, which means that it can be produced and finished in many different polishes, looks, and feels. Second, granite is very scratch-resistant, which is perhaps one of the other reasons that people choose this type of building material for their counter tops.

Counter tops are not the only piece of furniture that is often chosen to be built with granite, though. Foyer centerpieces, such as those used for the tiles of the floor, are sometimes built with granite because it can greatly withstand the foot-traffic without much damage to the surface. Garage floors are even sometimes laced with granite for the hardness factor. All in all, granite is definitely one of the more high-quality building materials.

When it comes right down to it, granite shall continue to be one of the most popular construction and building materials for new homes and even decorative pieces for all types of reasons. The fact that granite is very resistant to scratches and a durable product does make it one of the more expensive ways to build, but also makes it one of the most beautiful and aesthetically pleasing as well.

Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction. However, the materials used, the quality of the mortar and workmanship, and the pattern in which the units are assembled can significantly affect the durability of the overall masonry construction. Masonry units, such as brick, tile, stone, glass brick or concrete block generally conform to the requirements specified in the 2003 International Building Code (IBC) Section 2103.

Pervious Concrete

Pervious Concrete uses little to no sand in its production process. The absence of the fine aggregate creates an open-cell structure and thus a more sufficient storm water management system that allows rainwater to filter through to underlying soil. There are both environmental and cost-cutting advantages to applying this material to a land development project. According to the United States Enviromental Protection Agency (EPA), nearly 90% of pollutants found on the surface of traditional parking lots leak into our rivers and streams via storm water runoff. Luckily the use of Pervious Concrete has improved these conditions by allowing oils and other hydrocarbon liquids to pass through the surface and enter back into the ground.

Without the need for retention ponds and other costly storm water management practices, pervious concrete can also be considered the most economical choice for contractors. Consequently the material also minimizes the potential for flash flooding and standing water.

Self-Consolidating Concrete

granite

Otherwise known as self-compacting concrete, this highly flowable and non segregating concrete practically erases the need for mechanical vibration when applying concrete to a land development project. The material fills formwork and encapsulates even considerably congested reinforcement, while still maintaining its workability and durability. The economic advantage of this material can be seen in the way it accelerates project schedules and optimizes site manpower. Less labor is required and therefore contractors needn’t demand as high a level from workers.

Fiber Reinforced Concrete

When looking to reduce the formation of settlement cracks and shrinking in the initial phase of the setting process, fibermesh fibers are where to turn. This product discourages the concrete ingredients from segregating, and adds tensile strain capacity to a surface on which concrete has just been applied. These reactions caused by the fibers are what help the concrete to reach its fullest potential in terms of strength and aesthetic finish.

Depending on structural requirements, fibers can sometimes be used instead of or in combination with welded wire fabric to reinforce a ready-mix product without the use of fabrication or formation. In tern, fibers can minimize labor along with in place costs. Quicker and easier construction also accelerates a pouring schedule, and allows the job to get done with the use of common tools as any remnants of the additive are quickly worn away by vehicle or foot traffic.

This material can be used in place of compacted borrowed fill for applications including bedding and backfill for utility trenches or retaining walls, paving subbase, and bridge abutments. Underground structures to which this product can also be applied include abandoned tanks, basements, tunnels, mines and sewers.

For cost effective, safety, and performance related reasons, flowable fill is an alternative to any other kind of backfill. It can often reduce in place costs due to it being:

  • Non-settling
  • Self leveling
  • Quick drying
  • Non-segregating
  • Easy to excavate
  • Requiring less personnel to handle it

In terms of safety benefits, flowable fill can be applied without workers having to enter the trench, thus avoiding the danger of possible cave-ins. The performance of this material is best evaluated by its easy placement, along with its relative strength
compared to standard backfill materials.

masonryCrushed Trap Rock

For safety and efficiency, we hire experts to blast the rock into large pieces of stone (rip rap) which are used in the construction of breakwaters, stone walls and erosion control projects. Occasionally, selected smaller pieces of this stone are more appropriate for these projects.

After being crushed, the stone is sorted into sizes ranging from 3/8” to 2”. A combination of different sizes of stone is blended with screenings to produce processed stone. Most of the rock, however, is delivered in 70-ton haul trucks to the primary crusher which handles 750 tons per hour. A conveyor belt hauls rock from the primary to the secondary crusher more efficiently than loading it back into trucks.
